All-Natural Disinfectant

All-Natural Disinfectant

Both of our babes have very sensitive skin so we’ve had to make many changes.

It amazes me to think about all of the things I’ve learned as a result of having kids (thank goodness for them).

A few years ago I saw a special on a Canadian television show called Marketplace on CBC Television.  It was about the carcinogens (cancer causing agents) found in cleaning supplies (please tell me you’re no longer using Magic Eraser).  It was easy to stop using most mainstream cleaning supplies after we saw this episode of Marketplace.  It really opened our eyes.

I find it incredible that we’re encouraged to use products full of chemicals to clean our kitchen counters.  And then we make a sandwich for our kids on that same counter.  Ugh.

Luckily even mainstream cleaning supply companies are getting greener and they have safer lines available at more reasonable prices in almost every grocery store.  It’s getting easier to be green and to prevent ourselves from getting sick from the toxins in these products.

I wanted to share this all-natural and homemade disinfectant with you.  I use it on everything – except floors as the oil in it can make them slippery!  We got the recipe from our former naturopath.  She uses the spray to clean her office and the waiting room toys in between patient visits.

10 drops tea tree oil

10 drops oregano oil

2-4 drops lavender oil – this can be any nice smelling oil so your house doesn’t smell like oregano!

Combine the drops of oil in an empty spray bottle.  Fill with water and it’s ready to go.

You can find these oils at your health food store, or at a grocery store with a health food section.  Oregano oil will be expensive but I think it’s worth it.  Why?  Because your health and the health of your family is worth it.

My babes love to use a spray bottle and this is one I don’t mind them playing with!

Do you have a favourite all-natural cleaning product?  We’d love to hear about it.

I like the lemon and baking soda idea – maybe for the kitchen sink? I love using baking soda on my sink – so cheap and easy!

Thanks for this one Maggie. Does the lavender really over power the other oils though? Kyle HATES the smell of tea tree so this would be my only concern. I on the other hand don’t mind it. It is also really good for adding to your neti pot for people who are suceptible to sinus infections such as moi. (A tip I also got from my naturopath.. gotta love them!)
