This week we were lucky enough to roam the aisles of Whole Foods in Toronto. By we, I mean me and Callum and Liv. Though I’m not sure they felt as lucky as I did, contained in a shopping cart. It’s the only way when you’re shopping with two wee ones.
Mr. Callum has inherited his lovely mother’s sweet tooth. I am always in search of “healthy” treats. Yes, I know. It’s an oxymoron. But some treats can be healthier than others (e.g juice-sweetened gummy bears are better than fructose-sweetened gummy bears).
We found two such healthy treats this week at Whole Foods. I’m not sure who was happier – me or Mr. Callum.
Here’s a mommy moment: whenever we go grocery shopping, I buy something for Callum. Maybe it’s rice crackers, maybe it’s a Jones Soda with Obama on the label, or maybe it’s a 60 cent dinky car. Grocery shopping sucks when you’re little so I like to make the ride easier for all of us. It works for us.
Back to our healthy treat finds and the glorious Whole Foods. Callum’s choice was the organic candy canes that were conveniently placed at the end of every aisle! Check out the ingredients: organic evaporated cane juice, organic brown rice syrup, natural peppermint flavor, and organic fruit juice. Now check out the ingredients from another candy cane brand (not organic, not sold at Whole Foods): SUGAR, GLUCOSE SYRUP, VEGETABLE OIL & HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL, CORN STARCH, CALCIUM CARBONATE, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN,, MONO AND DIIGLYCERIDES, NATURAL FLAVOUR, COLOUR (WITH TARTRAZINE). No thank you, not for my babes. I obviously bought him (and his grandparents) a box of candy canes. That was an easy choice.
My treat find was GLEE gum . Mr. Callum is slightly obsessed with gum – I don’t think he really even likes the taste of it, just the “I’m a big boy” idea of chewing it. But the thought of him putting a piece of EXTRA gum in his mouth does not sit well with me – hello artificial sweeteners that have been connected to many illnesses and diseases! Did you know that the FDA denied aspartame approval as a dried good EIGHT times before it was finally approved? That’s a no-brainer for me (is this turning into a rant?). So I saw the GLEE gum and it’s cute pink packaging (not to mention that it’s named after my favourite TV show) and just had to share it with my little dude. He was thrilled when he tasted it, “Mommy, it tastes like bubble gum!” Score one for Mommy and one for Whole Foods.
So those are my Friday finds. What will next week bring – especially as we roll into the Christmas season head on? Only one way to find out baby… tune in next Friday!
ps We went to our local Health Food Store this week and were please to find the Pure Fun Candy Canes there too!
